I just finished up a Netflix series called the Outer Banks. Yes, I watched a show that is aimed for teenage girls but let’s get past that to talk about an important issue. The issue at hand is that the actors portraying these 16 or 17 year old high schoolers are pushing 30 years old. The first issue I have with this is that it makes the show unrealistic. How am I supposed to believe that these actors are in High School going through High School things that look like already happened 5-10 years ago. Second, it falsely portrays how you are supposed to look when you are 16 or 17 years old. Lets take a look at the cast of Outer Banks.

Main Character John B. is played by Chase Stokes: Age 27

This man looks nothing like what I looked like in High School and quite frankly if you looked like he did in High School you would probably get made fun of. Did I just say that because I wish I looked like that, maybe. This kid could pull off 30 more than he could pull off 16. He is 11 years older than the character he is playing.

Smoke Show Alert, Sarah Cameron is played by Madelyn Cline: Age 22

This is why I have to like the fact that they cast older people for high school roles. If this girl was 16 it would be inappropriate to find her attractive and honestly it would be creepy. Sarah Cameron grabs you while you watch and thank goodness she is 22. This girl would walk right past me if we ever saw each other which is rather unfortunate.

The rest of the friend group is 21 which includes Kie (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), JJ (Rudy Pankow).

The entire friend group is pretty much 6 years older than they should be which I think is absurd. Honestly all three of them can pass for being 18 but they can’t pass for 16. These three have to be the most believable. Kie low-key smoke.

Topper, the douchey boyfriend, played by Austin North: Age 23

You try believing this guy is 16 for 10 episodes and not getting angry. This guy looks like he has 3 kids and a mortgage to pay. To talk about the show for a second, this guy is unbearable and portrays everything that is wrong with humanity. Just a huge douche that makes you furious while watching a teenage drama series.

The last character and probably the biggest question mark of the series is Rafe. Rafe is played by Drew Starkey: Age 26

Rafe is a 18 year old big brother in the series but you really can’t tell me he looks 18. The opening scene I could’ve swore he was some sort of financial analyst in his mid twenties checking in on his summer house after a hurricane.
